The Matador is part of Texas Tech’s rich traditions. On January 1, 1954 at the Gator Bowl in Tampa, Florida the now famous Masked Rider made his first appearance. Joe Kirk Fulton surprised the fans and the nation when, black cape flapping in the wind, he stormed out on to the field riding a solid black horse. Said a writer for the Atlanta Constitution, “No team in any bowl game ever made a more sensational entrance.”
Today The Masked Rider on the black horse is among the most recognizable mascots in college sports and the storied tradition continues.
